The Blue vs. Teal Pumpkin Debate at Halloween

As Halloween approaches, planning for the special day is on the mind of many. One topic of debate related to this wonderful day is the use of blue pumpkin buckets by autistic trick - or - treaters. While many families have used them the last few years, not everyone agrees that they are a good idea.

The Teal Pumpkin Project ~

Over the past decade, the teal pumpkin project has been gaining popularity. Created by the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization to promote safety and share awareness of dangerous food allergies, the campaign is geared towards helping kids with food allergies enjoy Halloween without the risk of reactions.

The campaign has since expanded to include other special needs and diversity, such as Autism.

FARE has websites dedicated to providing information and resources to support families that are offering non-food items for all the little monsters that come to their door.

Blue Pumpkin Candy Bucket -

Blue pumpkins have been used by autistic trick - or - treaters for the last few years, however they are not as popularly known as the teal. The color blue for Autism is in itself a source of unease with many people in the Autistic community, due to it's history with the organization Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is unfavorable with many in the autistic community for various reasons, and have been quoted stating that blue should represent autism because more autistics are boys. Overall, the color red is preferred to the color blue when promoting autism acceptance.

Pros to consider in using a blue pumpkin:

Some families have reported reduced stressful interactions for autistic children and their families, if houses are aware that they may not be able to speak. For example, the house may be more quiet, respectful, and understanding not to jump and scare a child with a blue pumpkin.

It can be an indicator that the child is unable to talk, preventing any misunderstanding by a child not saying trick or treat.

Some households utilize blue pumpkins to share that they are a safe space for all kids, including those with disabilities.

Cons to consider when using a blue pumpkin:

Some families have expressed that using blue pumpkins can be damaging and dangerous.

Carrying a pumpkin bucket that is differently-colored can encourage isolation or targeting by bullies and predators.

Lastly, some families believe it is more fun for them to blend in. Not all kiddos want to divulge their diagnoses to their friends.
