Summer is here! As a working busy mom, I look forward to summer break as much as my kiddos. However, keeping three busy bee children engaged, and not glued to a video game or movie can be a challenge. The dreaded battle over screen time versus inevitable sibling squabbles is a struggle.
As a compromise, we have changed our approach.... And it's working!
Instead of telling our kiddos you are restricted from playing minecraft or splatoon, we set boundaries. So, How is that any better?
Permitted electronics with modified choices-
Instead of blocking youtube, we have set profiles that are based on categories instead of people. This allows us to change the settings to only allow specific videos/channels. Limited videos for us include craftee as it is overstimulating. However, exercise videos like Cosmic Kids and tutorials are unlimited.
We do not permit devices with internet access or youtube in bedrooms for safety.
We do allow tablets with creative apps or learning apps already installed.
Breaks are mandatory.... No breaks = hyper fixation = not stopping for food, toilet breaks = anger and meltdowns.
We use timers for quick movement breaks. We use timers to remind our kids to take a break from the screen to do 5 stretches, use the bathroom, etc.
2. Integrating intentional techie projects-
We are embracing the role that technology has on all of our lives. We are directing our kids to be creative, develop new techie skills, challenge themselves, and discover new interests.

Educational Websites
Prevent the summer slide, while keeping learning light and fun. A great compromise to worksheets and playing games on the computer, is using learning websites to keep your kiddos from losing their school readiness skills.
There a wonderful educational websites available for kids that help them learn about subjects, sharpen their skills, and have fun playing games at the same time. (For a list of sites we have used, please refer to my 'Kid requested, parent approved educational websites' blog.)
One website that uses a gamified learning approach, that my kids can't get enough of is SplashLearn.
2. Learn how to code
Whether your kids are new to coding or already have some experience, there is something for them to gain and learn.
My AuDHD son is a fanatic about programming video games. Rather than engage in a persistent battle to avoid spending too much time on video games, we have elected to help him learn how to code and develop games.
One site that is a great starter for kids to get started is Tynker. The site offers games design, art, robotics, JavaScript, and Python, and makes coding fun for many ages.
3. Join a Techie Game League
If your kiddo loves video games and is not a fan of team sports, there is a compromise. Some cities offer gaming leagues where kids meet in teams to design and compete in video games. The leagues compete virtually around the globe on a secured server, and the teams are coached by individual coaches.
One example of the league that my son can't get enough of is XP League.
4. Learn Graphic Design
If you have an aspiring designer or artist at home, then Canva is an awesome resource. Canva offers courses to support any aspiring learner to design their best work. My son and daughter have very few common interests, and yet both can't get enough of the classes and options to create in Canva.
5. Read an eBook or listen to audiobooks
Luckily my children cannot get enough books and always enjoy using their own personal library cards. An excellent online alternative to a local library is Epic! The application recommends books that are on the child's level and interest, without the risk of inappropriate adult novels being available.
For homeschool families that want to keep a log of your child's progress, Epic! offers this feature. My kids can read on the computer and mobile devices. Unlike other stores such as Kindle, kids are safe to search through appropriate titles and genres.
